As part of a 8 - 10 week unit entitled "Buying the Farm", students explore basic environmental concepts through a virtual investigation of a farm in Clermont County. Topics include, groundwater, surface water, pesticides, toxic wastes, endangered species, and biodiversity. With each of these "mini-units", I am proposing a videoconference with professionals in the field. The first videoconference will be with Tom Hudson, a geologist for URS Corporation, discussing groundwater pollution. Other professional contacts will include The Wilds, SAIC Environmental Consultants, and the U.S. and Ohio EPAs.
IP/Video cameras Usage of the equipment will be intermittent but scheduled at least 5 school days in advance of need. The laptop computers will be needed first on Tuesday 2/19. I would like to check out the polycams on Thursday 2/14, returning them on Friday 2/22.

Writing across the state
Students will team up with students from Lakewood High School to write in-depth stories for both the Glen Este newspaper and the Lakewood newsmagazine.
To accomplish this, students will communicate via e-mail (using laptops) and research using internet and other resources. We will videoconference at least once during the process for students to see the final product of what they've done. We may schedule another videoconference mid-project to ensure students have communicated sufficiently to write effective stories.
Because this is an ongoing, long-term project, we would like to continue using the laptops on Fridays and add Thursdays when they are not scheduled for other projects. This assignment will run 3/4/02 through 4/26/02

Molly Gage (AHS) and myself are doing a comparative project for our U.S. Issues I classes on the building of the Panama Canal. Our classes will be broken into groups covering the political side of this issue along with the practical building side of the issue. Our clases will collaberate on these issues and determine the eventual success or failure of this project in a political sense as well as the practical sense.
This is the first time for the both of us to use this equipment. I would feel more comfortable if we had Jim or Chad and Mike walk us through the project,from the classroom use of the laptops to the actual use of the V-Tel equipment in the lab.

The AHS first-bell Environmental Science Class will be videoconferencing with "The Wilds", a zoo consortium in Ohio. The wilds offers an IVDL session on biodiversity and strip mine recovery. The Wilds will send information and lab supplies in preparation for the videoconference. The first-bell class will interact with the Wilds staff, and the subsequent bells of Environmental Science will watch a videotape of the first bell class. Student generated questions from those subsequent bells that are not answered by the videotape will be submitted to The Wilds, asking for a response.

Inside Shakespeare is a program for high school students. I would like my Honors English 10 students to participate in this program.
No other equipment that I know of. I've never done a virtual field trip, so I will most definitely need help.

After the video conference with Inside Shakespeare, my Honors English 10 students will present scenes from Midsummer Night's Dream to a middle school in Michigan. For two weeks, the students enrolled in Spanish Advertising, Marketing and Web Design will be involved in preparing for a video conference with a Spanish marketing and avertising representative at P&G. We will be preparing for this video conference during march 3 - 14 and the videoconference will take place March 13. The students will be using the laptop lab, the digital camera, and the vtel (or h.310).
