Mrs. Algier's Class

Welcome to our classroom.  This is where we learn about literature, language,  mathematics, social studies, and partake in many learning experiences that will help us become happier, productive people as we grow.  We begin our day with daily journal writing.  It’s a good way to express our feelings and opinions.  Gym, music, art, and library stimulate our minds early in the morning as well.  Before the core subjects get underway, we have a small snack to get ourselves energized.  By lunchtime, we have covered reading, language, and mathematics.  After lunch, we enjoy an outside recess break, weather permitting.  During the afternoon we study science and social studies.  In the fifth grade we are also offered band, strings, and chorus on certain days of the week.

READING-  Our reading class is team taught by the intermediate resource instructor, Ms. Sherri Knodel, and myself.  It is a novel based program focusing on reading comprehension, writing skills, vocabulary skills, and skills to help us utilize higher level thinking .  You will want to try to master our “tricky” question quizzes by reading assigned pages several nights per week.  Some of the books that we read are:  All About Sam, The Canada Geese Quilt, Sarah Plain and Tall, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, Shiloh, Stone Fox, Light At Tern Rock, Helen Keller, The Family Under the Bridge, Kayla Delaney and the Good Girl Blues, The Lemonade Trick, Secret Soldier, Meiko and the Fifth Treasure, and Orphan Train Rider.   We are currently implementing additional units on nonfiction to enhance our program.  (Click on the book covers below to find out more about the authors.)
