Welcome to 2nd Grade at W-T!

All the second grade teachers love teaching this grade level.  We hope you and your children are ready for a fun and challenging year!

Second graders start the year with many skills on which they are ready to build.  They know the basics of how to read.  They continue to learn how to decode new words and to add hundreds of words to their basic sight word vocabulary.  Second graders start to transition from the “learning to read” stage into the “reading to learn” stage.   Lots of time is spent on comprehension activities using fiction and nonfiction texts.

The second grade math program is very challenging.  Students review and master basic skills such as identifying place value to thousands, telling time to 5-minute intervals , and counting money combinations using coins and bills.  They continue to work on learning their basic addition and subtraction facts, and then move into two-place addition and subtraction with “regrouping” or “trading.”  Second graders even do some beginning multiplication, fractions and geometry.

Second graders also become “awesome authors.”  Lots of time is spent learning and using the six traits of writing: Ideas, Organization, Voice (child’s own style and language), Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions (capitals, punctuation, spelling, etc.)  Second grade is also the year when students are introduced to cursive writing.

We are looking forward to a wonderful year with you and your children!
