Literacy

Part 1 : MONDAY  : Introduction

We prepare for the week writing down homework assignments for and the week and practice cursive handwriting. We also discuss our writing activity for the week.   We study Bloom's Taxonomy, plexers, brain teasers, creative thought and organization skills.

Part 2: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Increase Understanding

Students read a fiction or non-fiction story or article.  To help us dig for a better understanding we use our schema to make connections while we read.  We think about how the story relates to our experiences using text to self, text to text and text to world connections.  We  are working on questioning while we read in order to dig even deeper into the understanding the story.  We introduce vocabulary and work on making words.  We begin a writing assignment that we work on daily and finish on Friday.

Most of the time we enjoy three days of station work.

The stations include:

1. Reading Comprehension and Skill Work

2. Vocabulary and Word Development

3. Writing Assignment for the Week

4.  Response to Reading

5. Accelerated Reading Comprehension Program

6. Enrichment - Very important. FUN ACTIVITY!

Part 3: Friday: Wrap Up

Students evaluate what they have learned during the week.  We enjoy handing out shells for our Accelerated Reading Program; GO to the Beach and Read awards.  Click on the books below to learn more about this exciting program.  We also do a Friday Fun activity that involves following written directions.

Accelerated Reading is  very important at W.T. Students earn  prizes. See the Accelerated Reader Link On W.T.'s Home Page to learn more.

Math

We use a Math series called Everyday Math.  It correlates with the National Standards in Math.  Students have a hands - on approach to Math.  They look forward to Math every day!

Just For Fun!

We believe 90% of our day should be fun.  We strive to find ways to learn through laughter.
