He Stood On the Ledge Looking Out To the Sky

by Kevin Vance
In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday - March 3, 2008

He stood on the ledge looking out to the sky,

Always waning to leave, but he didn’t know why.

The world he must see, all the far away lands,

The great sights to see at the touch of his hands,

So he hopped to the ground and stomped down the trail,

Taking in all the sights, he noticed a snail.

They traveled together both far and wide,

Seeing mountains, and portraits and low and high tide.

The sky was the limit and he just wouldn’t stop

He’d find really big trees and climb to the top.

He was awoken suddenly with a great mighty shake

Feeling urgent resentment this journey was fake!

But he soon cracked a smile and started to laugh

“What is my problem? This is like simple math!”

“Me plus this place is familiar and warm,”

“but between that and adventure, I’m unrightfully torn”

“so I’ll take a trip, just a visit or two,”

“but for now I’m just fine in my own homely shoes.”

And every year since he’s taken vacation

Just to appreciate all the things to imagine.
