TIPS FOR PARENTS ON HOW TO HELP YOUR
CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL
     IN MIDDLE SCHOOL

 THINGS YOU CAN EXPECT:

      More homework
      More long-term projects
      More movement-larger campus
Lots of calls from new friends
Your child may start to exclude you from the school experience

 THINGS YOU CAN DO:

Establish a set study time each evening.
Read the school handbook. It will be given out during the first week of school.
Establish a calendar for long-range assignments and school events.
Check your child's homework organizer each evening. Look over completed
      assignments.

 ABOUT PEERS:

Students will have new friends. Become involved with this in a positive way.
Communicate with parents of new friends about any plans.
Know that it's normal for adolescents to have "off and on" friendships.
      Expect some changes in behavior.

 ABOUT EMOTIONS:

Help your child to see himself or herself as someone who can succeed.
Try to maintain an atmosphere at home that is as relaxed and free from pressure and tension as possible.
Maintain open lines of communication with your child.
Help your child lead a balanced life.

 ABOUT INVOLVEMENT:

      Be positive about the transition.
      Be positive about school.
Become involved at school in a general way: Conference with teachers, administrators and counselors when you have questions.
Don't wait until a problem arises. If you sense there are problems beyond the normal school adjustment, contact the school.
