The task of defining and constructing curriculum for cognitive and specific academically gifted students is a major challenge for educators of the gifted.  Gifted students require an expanded curriculum in order to realize their potential and maximize their intellectual and personal growth.  This often takes the form of teacher-developed units and/or activities that are based on the following seven areas:

1.  research
2.  problem-solving
3.  critical thinking
4.  creative thinking
5.  communication
6.  leadership
7.  self-concept/ interpersonal
relationships
