Glen Este Middle School offers several after school clubs for students to be involved in.  Below are the clubs we have for the 2006/07 school year.

Glen Este Middle Student Council

Student Council is open to all 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students attending Glen Este Middle School. Students interested in being council members are expected to be conscientious students with a strong desire to work with their peers, faculty, and administration toward the common goal of improving the learning culture of Glen Este Middle School. Elections will be held the week of September 25-29. Student Council will meet twice a month on Thursdays from 2:15 until 3:30 P.M. beginning in October. Students will be notified about meetings via WGEM and school announcements. Mrs. Cindy Leazer is the advisor.

The purpose of GEMSSC is to:

  • Create an avenue for students to voice and deal with student concerns and issues;
  • Empower students with voice and responsibility in their school lives;
  • Include students in the processes, which influence their academic lives;
  • Give students practice in democracy and leadership;
  • Develop leadership qualities of middle school students by way of service to the school and community;
  • Assist in peer conflict resolution;
  • Provide for an exchange of ideas among the student body;
  • Plan and organize activities and projects which advance the social and civic development of the student body;
  • Promote school spirit and an attitude of cooperation between the faculty, administration, and school body.

Jazz Band

Jazz Band is open to 7th and 8th grade students. Music of various styles is performed, including jazz, blues, rock, and swing. Members will need to be able to participate in several 3:30 P.M. performances. Rehearsals start in January and are held once a week until 3:30 P.M. in the band room. Anyone interested in joining the jazz band should see Mr. Morgan, band director, regarding audition times.


Homework Club

Homework Club, sponsored by the PTO, is open to all students at Glen Este Middle School. The purpose of the club is to help students with homework and/or study skills. Students are required to be on time and have the desire to work. Two teachers will be present at all sessions for academic help. Homework Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:15 until 3:15 P.M., location will be announced. 


WGEM

WGEM is a broadcasting crew consisting of 12 student reporters. The crew records a daily news show for the student body. The reporters also work with GEMS students and staff and travel the greater Cincinnati area to gather information for quarterly specials. These specials are written, produced, directed, filmed, and edited by the team. The WGEM team will meet after school two to three times a week in the WGEM/studio tech room or on location. Weekend work may be required. WGEM is open to 8th grade students who will "try out" at the end of their 7th grade year. Mr. Bob Brosmer is the advisor.


Fellowship of Christian Athletes

FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) is a group of students, headed by Ms. Erin Kurtz, who do service projects at school and in the community and have loads of fun while doing it! FCA is open to all students. Meetings are held every Friday after school until 3:30 P.M. in room 302. Meetings start October 6. Come join the fun!


Sign Language Club

In Sign Language Club, students will be introduced to and educated about the deaf culture and using sign language. The club meets every Wednesday, starting October 25, until 3:30 P.M. in room 346. Sign Language Club is open to all students. Ms. Jennie Schwalbach is club advisor. Come and let your hands do the talking! 


Architecture Club

If you enjoy designing and building models, this club is for you! Architect's Club will meet the second Monday of every month starting on October 9. The club will meet in the library immediately after school until 3:15 P.M. Students should bring a note from a parent giving permission to join. Bowling

Cherry Grove Lanes offers two 10-week sessions of after-school bowling (fall and winter) every school year, open to all students. The fall session begins October 5. Students are transported from school by Petermann Bus Service on Thursdays. Students are to be picked up by parents no later than 5:30 P.M. at Cherry Grove Lanes. Students should listen to announcements for registration information or parents can call Cherry Grove Lanes at 528-7888.


Youth Wrestling (6th Grade)

The Youth Wrestling Program is available to 6th grade students only. This is a winter activity that begins in November. Contact Coach Brent Branson for more information at 528-9922.


Laser Tag Club

Scallywag Tag will begin October 17 and run through December 12 (no games on November 5). Petermann Bus Service will pick up players immediately after school and take them to Scallywag Tag. Players must be picked up by parents at Scallywag Tag between 4:30-5:30 P.M. Cost is $80.00. Contact Jim or Bob Leopold at 528-3696.


Crafting Fun

Crafting opportunities will be available once every month starting in October. Learn how to do stamping, jewelry making and painting to name just a few. Listen to the WGEM to find out when and where to meet for the month's crafting project. There is no charge to participate but each class will be limited in size. Students should bring a note from a parent giving permission to attend.


Board Game Club

Do you enjoy playing Scrabble or other EDUCATIONAL games? If so, bring your game, best friend and a snack on the third Monday of each month for an hour of fun. Meet in the library immediately after school until 3:15 P.M.


Stock Market Club

Stock Market Club takes place for 10 weeks in the fall and 10 weeks in the spring. Fall dates are October 3 – December 5, 2006.  The spring session dates will be February 12 – April 20, 2007.  Information will be available at the beginning of February for the spring session. We meet on Tuesdays from 2:15 – 3:15 pm in room 339.  The Stock Market Club is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders at GEMS. We use a program through the University of Cincinnati's Economics Center.  The students compete in an on-line computer simulation of buying, selling, and trading stocks.  Mrs. Walls is the advisor.  Click here to download a permission form.
