Spartan Spotlight

April 2006

Message from the Principal . . . . .

Spring break is upon us and what a great time for students and staff to relax and get rejuvenated! Spring is also a time for new beginnings and new growth. Although testing is over and the school year is winding down, there is still plenty of time for students to grow academically and socially.

I know that everyone’s family schedules are crazy at this time of year, running to ball practice and other activities, but keep encouraging your child to sit down and study a little each night. It’s even more important when students are busy that they use their time wisely and establish routines. When their studies are over, encourage them to get off the computer and away from the TV and go out and play with friends. Middle school children need time to socialize with peers.

During the fourth quarter, our staff will be working on transitioning our students to the next grade level. We will be welcoming the fifth grade students from our elementary feeder schools. Additionally, a group of our eighth grade teachers are spending in-service time with the freshman staff. They are getting feedback from teachers and sharing information to make the move to the high school easier for them, as well. There are many things that we will be doing to assist in the transitioning, but none are more important than making sure that our students are academically prepared to handle the next grade level classes.

I wish everyone a safe spring break and look forward to a great remainder of the year!

Did You Know . . . .

Positive motivation not only helps a child succeed in school, but also helps the child to see that learning is rewarding and important in all aspects of life: school, work and community. To increase your child’s motivation:

  • Let your child know that you think learning is important.

  • Praise your child’s efforts and motivation.

  • Teach your child’s good study skills and habits.

  • Teach your child to be responsible at home by assigning chores and having expectations for proper behavior.

  • Plan family activities that encourage learning (e.g. visits to the library, museums, parks).

  • Talk with your child about school and show an interest in what goes on at school.

  • Let your child see you read books, newspapers and magazines and talk about what you read.

  • Have a set schedule for doing school work after school.

  • Set up a place for your child to study and make sure your child finishes schoolwork at home before doing things that could be distracting, like watching TV.

  • Show your child that you respect his or her teacher.

  • Talk often with your child’s teacher.

For more information on how to help your child become motivated at school contact Maria Oddo, M.Ed., school psychologist intern at 947-7735.

Parents: Be Aware

There are many internet websites out there that your child has access to that are not appropriate. One particular site that has made national news is called "My Space." Check with your internet provider to see how you can block certain sites.

Glen Este Middle School Dress Code

Parents, we need your help! As the weather gets warmer, the school dress code gets challenged and pushed to the limit. Please see that your child comes to school dressed appropriately. Please refer to the West Clermont dress code guidelines that you received at the beginning of the school year. If you need another pamphlet, stop by the school office any time to pick one up.
