February 2005

Message from the Principal . . . . . .

Dear Parents,

I believe it was this time last year that I wrote to you about the importance of passing the school levy. I urged everyone to vote “yes.” Now, as I watch the news and read the newspaper about those schools that still have not passed their operating levies, I am ever so thankful that our levy passed. Keeping focused on meeting high academic standards while emphasizing proper social behaviors is a full time job for all of us. It takes 100% focus from everyone. Thanks to you, our supportive community, we are not distracted from this work by talk of staffing or bussing cuts.

Even with the passage of the levy, we must still continue to use our funds wisely and look for new ways to improve student achievement without asking for more from you. For instance, through a grant, four science and math teachers and I are taking part in a year-long initiative, offered by Miami University, to examine student data for instructional improvement. Also, four math teachers are participating in the Ohio Mathematics Academy Program, several teachers are participating in workshops on differentiating instruction and reading (SIRI), and four teachers are participating in the “Youth for Justice” program. These programs do not require any additional funds!

These programs are just a few of the professional development initiatives taking place at your school which does not take resources away from your students. It allows us to grow professionally and bring new knowledge and insights back to our classrooms. Everyone benefits.

We will continue to find ways to improve student achievement while proving to you that we are a resourceful and understanding community partner. Thank you for your support and confidence!

$1000 Lawrence T. Green Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded based on application and essay.

$500 D. Chance Carr Scholarship
$500 Lincoln Schlueter Scholarship

The Schlueter/Carr scholarships will be judged on the basis of recommendation letters written and submitted by teachers, counselors or other staff members. This scholarship is not based solely on GPA. The basis for selection could be outstanding citizenship, financial need or extra effort, using the teacher recommendation letters as criteria. Students may ask a teacher to submit a letter on their behalf, but students will not apply for these scholarships personally.

** Applications for all scholarships will be available from high school guidance counselors on February 11 and are due back to counselors by March 15.
