Message from the Principal . . . . .
When I was younger, I used to laugh at how my parents were so
stuck to daily routines. Every day looked the same to me.
Breakfast and dinner were at the same time. The wash was done on
Tuesdays. Bills got paid on Thursday, etc., etc. Now, as I’m
getting older, I’m finding out what my parents knew back then:
routines are necessary. Developing routines are not really
different from developing habits. We all have routines that we’ve
developed to help us in everyday life. I have come to the
conclusion that the routines that each student establishes are
what sometimes separates successful students from unsuccessful
students. Middle school students desire more independence. But,
just because they are given more opportunities to develop
independence doesn’t mean that they don’t need structure. Their
ability to develop and follow schedules is what helps them become
more independent. They need to learn to develop school routines to
be the best student they can be. They need to develop a schedule,
with the help of their parent, to learn to prioritize work, to
determine when and where they will complete their homework, and
develop long term scheduling techniques to prepare for exams.
The third trimester has just begun, and if you haven’t done so
already, please sit down with your child and help them develop a
nightly schedule or routine to help them be more successful at
school. Show them how important school is to you by having them
show you their homework or what they are working on in class. I
want every child to be academically successful and to be prepared
for not only high school but college, as well. Together, we can
make that happen!

the following thank you letter from a soldier:
To the staff and students of Glen Este Middle School,
I’m a Marine helicopter pilot in Iraq and recently received
letters from you via the Yellow Ribbon Support Network. I just
wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your kind comments
and thoughtfulness. We read every card and letter we receive and
cannot over-emphasize how much the support from home means.
My squadron is heading home very soon so we are all very excited
to see our loved ones after such a long separation. Your support
has kept us going during the deployment! Thanks again!

Scoliosis Screening
The Ohio Department of Health has recommended that all schools
participate in a scoliosis screening program. Normally, the spine
grows straight from the neck to the tailbone, but in 2-3% of the
population the spine begins to curve. If scoliosis is left
untreated, the curve can progress, eventually causing pain,
significant cosmetic deformity, or heart, lung or gastrointestinal
problems. Students in grades seven and eight will be initially
screened the week of March 21. A letter will be sent home to
parents prior to the screening with more information.
