Spartan Spotlight

March 2006

Message from the Principal . . . . .

I am fortunate to have the opportunity to get involved in the lives of over 1,000 students daily. I am involved with helping students deal with problems, give advice, and simply listen.

It is very hard to be a kid these days with everything they are exposed to through music and media. I also think that it’s harder to be a parent of a teen today than when we grew up. We used to go out and ride bikes or climb trees for hours at a time. Our parents didn’t worry about sexual predators asking kids to get in cars. Today it’s scary as a parent. There are many negative influences out there for our kids to fall victim to and we must pay closer attention in order to protect them.

Would you drop your child off in a strange place unsupervised? Of course you wouldn’t. Would you let your son or daughter use the internet for hours at a time unsupervised? It’s probably happened and may even be occurring regularly. I constantly deal with students who are having issues with one another about something that was written on a website or text messaged to them. Although this activity happens at home, kids bring their emotions to school with them the next day. I recently learned what a “blog” is. It’s a chat room for kids to go to and “express their views.” I’ve seen hard copies of some of this chatter and there’s no way I’d want my daughters involved! The language is disgusting and its just a place for kids to put down others. These sites breed disrespect and break down the moral fiber that kids need to mature into respectful, caring adults.

The internet is also an avenue for sexual predators. Talk to your child about the dangers of communicating via the internet to anyone they don’t know. Make sure that they know to come to you if anyone on the internet mentions anything inappropriate. If that happens, call the Union Township Police Department.

For your child’s sake, monitor their computer behavior. Place time limits for them on the computer. Make them sit down and talk to you instead. Keep them safe.
