Welcome to Mrs. Miller's Second Grade Web Page
Students read at home each night from books at their own reading level. Parents sign the form in the reading baggie. This provides a yearly record of books read at home. In the classroom, students are involved in the Accelerated Reader Program. Second Graders select a book to read independently. When finished, a comprehension test is taken on the computer. Prizes are awarded for points earned. This program is coordinated through the school library and is supplemented by the Second Grade teachers. The students love to read and are highly motivated by this program! A yearly record of books read and points earned is easily accessed by each student.
Parents are very important partners. A small amount of homework is assigned each night for students to practice skills at home. This enables parents to monitor their child's progress. Nightly reading is assigned since research has shown that children who are good readers are children who read and are read aloud to by their parents. Our goal is to create lifelong learners. Generally, homework follows this schedule. Several times throughout the year projects are assigned to be completed at home. Monday: Read book. Watch for math and spelling. Tuesday: Read book. Watch for math and spelling. Wednesday: Read book. Watch for math and spelling Thursday: Read book. Watch for math and spelling.
