West Clermont Words: Raising the Bar & Closing the Gap

What does the phrase “commit to excellence with every learner, every day, in every way” mean in West Clermont Schools?

This mission is about raising the bar and closing the gap for every student. We have a diverse student body who have unique needs, interests, challenges, and dreams for their future. Every West Clermont student deserves a quality educational experience. Not only are we focused on the basics of reading, writing, math, and technology for each student, and we want to ensure that we are preparing every student for thriving in the workforce of our 21st-century global marketplace. Accordingly, we will establish high standards for learning that we expect all students to achieve.

It is our responsibility with the collaboration of the families and communities to set conditions to realize this mission and knock out barriers that get in the way of learning. We can’t do that alone. Together, we are called to action to find solutions to simultaneously educate all students to a basic level of proficiency and produce graduates who can solve problems, think creatively, overcome challenges, communicate clearly, collaborate, and navigate vast amounts of information. This means we must build plans, processes, and partnerships that help each child to own their learning so they are prepared to learn throughout life. This requires us to activate “possibility thinking” to see beyond what we all experienced as children, what is, and explore intentionally what could be…

Key Teaching and Learning changes we are exploring in West Clermont as part of our WC Roadmap for Success include:

Portrait of a Graduate

  • We are creating a “north star” for West Clermont by clarifying the set of skills, knowledge, and mindsets that are necessary for all students to be successful in the world of school and beyond. In other words, when a West Clermont graduate walks across the stage to receive their diploma, what knowledge, skills and habits do we want to have exposed them to and instilled in them over the course of their time in our schools?

West Clermont Online Academy (WCOA)

  • We believe online learning options have the potential to serve our learners well beyond the global pandemic response. Therefore, we are exploring options, piloting, and creating a vision for what this might need to look like in West Clermont in the future.

Portrait of an Educator

  • Just as developing a Portrait of a WC Graduate is important, so is developing a Portrait of an Educator. Great teachers change lives and are the single greatest impact on student learning. In our fast-paced world, teachers are increasingly challenged with finding the right balance between being a facilitator of learning, a content expert, a mentor, and often many other roles as well. We know there is a growing need to evolve our profession and the ways we work. We are proud of the change efforts our staff has made in response to the school closure, fall reopening, and activation of various learning models.  Further exploration of how we best support and grow our staff is vital for continued retention and success.

Our administrative team takes a lot of pride in not just “surviving” the pandemic, but staying committed to our vision and continuing to dig deep and assess how we can improve throughout the duration of the pandemic and beyond. Over the course of the next several weeks, we will continue to work with the Board of Education, administrators, and various district design teams to use our best thinking and efforts to research, evaluate, listen and develop the next steps in the implementation of our vision to create success for all students.
